Learning Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Recall the most common reasons for resistant hypertension in the primary care setting.
  • Approach the work up of primary aldosteronism, a common cause of resistant hypertension.
  • Select appropriate medical therapy for patients with resistant hypertension.

Dr. Lisa Dubrofsky (Chair)

Dr. Lisa Dubrofsky is an Assistant Professor in the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. She is a hypertension specialist and nephrologist at Women’s College Hospital and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre. Her research interests are in quality improvement in complex hypertension management, with a focus on the peripartum period.

Dr. Karen Tran (Speaker)

Dr. Karen Tran is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at UBC. She works as a General Internal Medicine Specialist at Vancouver General Hospital and BC Women’s Hospital. She is the co-director of the VGH specialist hypertension clinic and member of Hypertension Canada BP Measurement committee. She is an early career researcher and her interests are digital tools in improving hypertension management and blood pressure measurement in pregnancy.

Dr. Jesse Bittman (Speaker)

Dr. Bittman is a general internist in Vancouver with clinical focus on hypertension and obesity medicine. He has completed training in diagnosis and management of resistant hypertension at UBC and University of Toronto and is on the Hypertension Canada Guidelines Committee. After 5 years at the hypertension clinic at St Pauls Hospital, he has recently left to start a multidisciplinary hypertension clinic at Revolution Medical clinic.
